About Our Founder
Luis Loya, also known as “Dino,” founded SK8 4KIDS and currently serves as its President. Originating his skateboarding journey in the mid-80s during a period of homelessness, skateboarding and the bonds forged through the sport became pivotal in keeping him focused on his goals and mental health. Focusing on something as simple as learning basic tricks not only kept him out of trouble, but also contributed to his eventual high school graduation despite the challenges of an unstable home. Dino, a firm believer in empowering and inspiring today’s youth through skateboarding, envisions SK8 4KIDS as a positive way to empower kids. Following six years in the Texas Guard, with four years on Active Duty in the Counter Drug Border Mission, Dino transitioned to become a Crime Analyst with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, accumulating over a decade of service. Witnessing the detrimental impact of narcotics on the border community, he conceived the idea of SK8 4KIDS, aiming to establish a positive haven in public skateparks. The organization has evolved into a thriving community where at-risk youths excel academically, socially, and experience improved mental health, supported by SK8 4KIDS’ secure after-school environment. The organization extends its assistance beyond club members, offering skateboarding equipment to children in the community, guided by volunteer coaches providing free lessons.
